Dentistry & Oral Surgery
Veterinary Dentistry & Oral Surgery in Williamsburg, VA
Dental health is a critical part of your pet’s overall wellbeing. Problems in the mouth can lead to pain, infection, and complications that affect other areas of the body if left untreated. Many dental issues develop gradually, and pets often do not show obvious signs of discomfort until the condition has progressed.
Routine dental care plays an important role in preventing disease, maintaining comfort, and supporting normal eating and behavior. At Middle Plantation Animal Hospital, we provide both preventive dental services and advanced oral surgery to address a full range of needs for pets in Williamsburg, Kingsmill, Queen’s Lake, Merrimac, and surrounding communities.
Routine Veterinary Dentistry
Routine dental care prevents and manages common oral health issues before they become more serious. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and tooth loss if not addressed early.
Dental services may include:
- Comprehensive oral exams to assess teeth and gums
- Professional dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar
- Digital dental radiographs (X-rays) to evaluate below the gumline
- Polishing to help slow future buildup
- Preventive care recommendations for at-home maintenance
Dental cleanings are performed under anesthesia to allow for a thorough and safe evaluation. This makes it possible to clean below the gumline and identify concerns that are not visible during a basic exam.
Signs of Dental Disease in Pets
Dental issues can present in different ways, and some signs may be subtle. Common indicators include:
- Bad breath
- Red or bleeding gums
- Difficulty chewing or dropping food
- Excessive drooling
- Pawing at the mouth
- Loose or missing teeth
These symptoms may indicate underlying dental disease and should be evaluated promptly.
Advanced Dental Care & Oral Surgery
When routine dental care is not enough to resolve an issue, more advanced treatment may be required. Oral surgery is recommended when disease, damage, or infection extends beyond what can be managed with cleaning alone.
Advanced dental and oral surgical services may include:
- Tooth extractions (simple and surgical)
- Treatment of advanced periodontal disease
- Removal of fractured or infected teeth
- Oral mass or growth removal
- Treatment of abscesses or oral infections
- Surgical repair of oral injuries
- Advanced diagnostics using dental radiographs
Each case is carefully evaluated to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. Imaging is often used to assess the full extent of disease and ensure all affected areas are addressed.
Removing diseased or damaged teeth can help relieve pain, prevent the spread of infection, and improve your pet’s overall comfort and quality of life.
Benefits of Ongoing Dental Care
Consistent dental care helps prevent more serious problems and supports your pet’s overall health. Oral infections can impact organs such as the heart and kidneys, making early intervention especially important.
Regular dental care can help:
- Reduce the risk of periodontal disease
- Improve comfort and ability to eat
- Prevent infection from spreading
- Support long-term health
Pets in communities like Kingsmill, Queen’s Lake, and Merrimac often benefit from routine dental care as part of maintaining their overall health and activity level.
When to Schedule a Dental Evaluation
A dental evaluation is recommended if your pet shows signs of oral discomfort or if it has been over a year since their last professional cleaning. Early evaluation can help prevent more advanced disease and reduce the need for extensive treatment.
Routine dental care, combined with monitoring at home, helps keep your pet’s mouth healthy and reduces the risk of complications over time.

Dentistry and oral surgery are essential parts of maintaining your pet’s health, addressing both preventive needs and more advanced conditions when they arise. With routine care and timely intervention, many dental issues can be managed before they impact your pet’s overall wellbeing.

If I could give Middle Plantation Animal Hospital infinity stars, I would. Dr. Roger and her phenomenal team are not just veterinary professionals—they're heartfelt healers, emotional lifelines, and truly extraordinary human beings. Dr. Roger is the type of vet who doesn’t just treat your pet—she sees them. She lovingly calls my rescue cats, Toby (7) and Gibby (14), “my babies” and treats them like they’re royalty with fur. Her honesty, empathy, and incredible depth of care turned what could’ve been a stressful experience into one of compassion and clarity. When I was overwhelmed, trying to navigate hard questions about my best friends’ health, her team became a net of support. They weren’t just staff—they were practically therapists with stethoscopes. Every visit felt like a mix of expert care and emotional sanctuary. Middle Plantation isn’t just a clinic; it’s a haven for pets and the people who love them. To say I’m grateful doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Peep my old baby Gibby at his first visit, and one of Dr. Roger’s helpers doing everything to make him comfortable. ❤️❤️Posted on Mara HilemanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We originally began taking our dog to Middle Plantation because it was barely a five minute drive from our home. We have since moved farther away and although there are many other closer options for us now we still take our dogs to Middle Plantation. Their kindness, care, compassion, and professionalism are completely worth the drive and unless we suddenly move to the other side of the country we have no desire to find a new vet. We have had three dogs in their care and trust them for everything from check ups to surgery to boarding. I would and do recommend their team to every local pet owner with zero reservations.
