Dr. Dunsmore DVM

Dr. Randall S. Dunsmore, D.V.M.

Practice Owner And Veterinarian

A steady interest in science and medicine, combined with early hands-on experience, set the foundation for Dr. Dunsmore’s career. As a high school student in Kansas, he began volunteering at Clinton Parkway Animal Hospital in Lawrence. That experience provided a firsthand look at clinical veterinary medicine and introduced him to the day-to-day realities of patient care. What began as an opportunity to learn quickly became a long-term commitment, as Dr. Dunsmore continued working at the hospital throughout his undergraduate studies and veterinary education.

Dr. Dunsmore attended Kansas State University, where he completed both his undergraduate degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. During that time, he worked closely with experienced mentors who played a significant role in shaping his approach to veterinary care. Their guidance reinforced the importance of clinical skill, thoughtful decision-making, and building strong relationships with clients. These early experiences helped solidify his path and prepared him for the next stage of his training.

Following veterinary school, Dr. Dunsmore completed a one-year internship at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. This additional training provided exposure to a wide range of complex cases and allowed him to further develop his clinical skills in a fast-paced environment. After completing his internship, he moved to Virginia, where he spent 18 years practicing in Newport News before opening Middle Plantation Animal Hospital in 2013.

As the practice owner and sole veterinarian, Dr. Dunsmore values the variety each day brings. His interests include laser surgical procedures, internal medicine, and exotic animal care. He appreciates the challenges that come with each case and finds fulfillment in working alongside clients and their families through every stage of care, from routine visits to more complex medical situations.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Dunsmore enjoys staying active through running and participating in triathlons. He has also maintained a long-standing interest in music, particularly playing the drums, which began at a young age and continued through college. At home, he shares his life with his wife, Melissa, their three sons, and a group of pets that continue to bring personality and balance to his daily routine.
